Scar Camouflage

Cover Your Transplant Scar With Precision Pigment Work

FUT strip scars and FUE punch-site marks are among the most common reasons clients come to Sonoma County SMP. Precise pigment placement blends scar tissue into the surrounding scalp — without surgery.

Hair transplant surgery produces results — and it also leaves evidence. FUT (follicular unit transplantation) creates a linear scar across the back of the scalp. FUE (follicular unit extraction) leaves small circular punch marks distributed across the donor area. Both types of scarring can be significantly reduced in visibility through scalp micropigmentation.

How SMP Scar Camouflage Works

Scar tissue does not absorb pigment the same way healthy scalp does — it is denser, less elastic, and often lighter in color than surrounding skin. Scar camouflage SMP uses a combination of precise pigment matching, adjusted needle pressure, and multiple passes to deposit pigment into scar tissue at a depth and density that blends with the surrounding scalp.

For FUT scars, the goal is to make the linear scar invisible when the hair is kept at a short length. Pigment is applied along the scar to match the surrounding scalp tone, breaking up the contrast between scar tissue and healthy skin.

For FUE punch sites, individual circular marks are treated and blended with the natural appearance of the surrounding donor area. The result is a more uniform donor zone that does not reveal the extraction pattern under short hair.

Timing and Candidacy

ISHRS guidelines recommend waiting until transplant growth has fully matured before proceeding with scar camouflage — typically twelve months post-surgery or longer. This ensures the scar has stabilized and the surrounding hair has grown in sufficiently to assess the final donor appearance.

Not every scar responds identically. Hypertrophic or raised scars, keloid-prone skin, and very pale or very dark scar tissue can all present challenges that we discuss openly at consultation. We will show you comparable healed examples and give you an honest assessment of the expected result before any session is booked.

Combined Treatments

Many scar camouflage clients also receive a full-head or density fill treatment at the same time — addressing both the recipient area and the donor area in a coordinated treatment plan. This approach is discussed at consultation once your goals and scalp condition are fully assessed.

Who This Is For

Common Scar Camouflage Presentations

FUT Linear Scar

A horizontal scar across the occipital scalp from strip harvesting. Most visible when hair is worn short. SMP blends the scar to match surrounding scalp tone and texture.

FUE Punch-Site Marks

Small circular extraction marks distributed across the donor zone. Appear as white or pale dots under short hair. Pigment deposits reduce contrast and restore visual uniformity.

Other Scalp Scarring

Accident scars, alopecia scarring, surgical scars, and other scalp injuries that have left visible marks. Each case is assessed individually at consultation.

The Process

Scar Camouflage Process

01

Scar Assessment

We examine the scar type, tone, texture, and age. You are shown comparable healed results and given a realistic outcome assessment before any session is confirmed.

02

Pigment Matching

Color is matched to your surrounding scalp — not just your hair. Scar tissue often requires a slightly adjusted formula to account for the lighter tone of scar skin.

03

Camouflage Session

Pigment applied to scar tissue with controlled pressure and density. Multiple passes may be required within one session to achieve uniform coverage.

04

Healed Review

Full result assessed at 6–8 weeks. Touch-up session applied if any areas require additional pigment depth or blending.
