Women experience hair thinning differently than men — and SMP treatment for women reflects that. The goal is rarely a buzz-cut look or full hairline restoration. It is almost always about reducing the visible scalp in areas where the hair has thinned: the part line, the crown, the temples, or diffusely throughout the top of the head.
How SMP Works for Women
Pigment is placed in thinning areas using follicle-sized deposits that match the existing hair color and scalp tone. When hair sits over the treated area, the pigment reads as shadow — reducing the contrast between hair and scalp and creating the appearance of fuller, thicker coverage.
Treatment is performed without shaving. You keep your existing hair length throughout the process. Most women notice the difference most clearly at the part line and crown, where even moderate thinning can make the scalp highly visible under direct light.
Alopecia and Patchy Hair Loss
SMP can also address patchy hair loss from alopecia areata or other conditions. Each case is reviewed individually at consultation — including an honest conversation about whether SMP is the most appropriate approach given the type, progression, and stability of the hair loss. We do not take on cases where we cannot produce a result we can stand behind.
What to Expect
A typical women's density fill treatment takes two to three sessions, spaced ten to fourteen days apart. Because the treatment works under existing hair, the result should not be visible as SMP — only as the appearance of a fuller scalp. Color matching and precise placement are critical to achieving this, which is why we will not rush the consultation process.
SMP for women is a discreet, private treatment. Sessions at Sonoma County SMP are by appointment only, one client at a time.
