Paramedical Scar Camouflage

For the Scars That Have Nothing to Do With Hair Loss

Burn scars, surgical scars, alopecia scarring, and trauma-related scalp changes are different from cosmetic hair concerns. This page is for those situations — and the people navigating them.

All paramedical consultations are private, by appointment only, and approached with complete discretion. There is no pressure, no timeline, and no expectation beyond an honest conversation.

A Different Kind of Consultation

Every Case Here Is Personal

Most scalp micropigmentation pages show before-and-after photos of men with pattern baldness. If you are here because of a burn, a surgery, an accident, or alopecia — those images probably do not look like you or reflect what you are dealing with. That is a real problem, and we acknowledge it directly.

Paramedical scar camouflage is a different discipline. It requires understanding scar tissue behavior, skin tone matching on non-standard surfaces, and — most importantly — an understanding that the person across the table may be carrying something heavier than a cosmetic concern.

We do not treat every case. Some scars are not appropriate candidates for pigment work. Some require prior medical clearance. We will tell you honestly at the consultation what is possible, what is not, and why. If we are not the right fit, we will do our best to point you toward someone who is.

"We will not show you a photo that looks nothing like your situation and ask you to imagine the result. We start with what you are actually dealing with."

Referrals from physicians, plastic surgeons, burn care teams, and mental health providers are welcomed and respected. We understand that when a medical professional refers a patient, they are extending trust — and we take that seriously.

What We Ask Before Any Session
  • How long ago the scar occurred and whether the tissue is fully stabilized
  • Whether any active skin conditions, medications, or treatments are currently in progress
  • Whether a physician has cleared the area for cosmetic procedures
  • What the client's expectations are — and whether they are realistic for the specific scar type
  • Whether there are any emotional or psychological considerations we should be aware of to ensure a safe and respectful session

Sonoma County SMP is Sonoma County body-art registered, bloodborne pathogen certified, and operates under California Safe Body Art Act standards. Paramedical cases are handled with the same sanitation and safety protocols as all treatments.

Conditions We Work With

Not Every Case Looks the Same

The situations below are not an exhaustive list. If your situation is not described here, contact us and describe what you are dealing with. We will be honest about whether we can help.

Burn Scars

Thermal, chemical, or radiation burn scars on the scalp or adjacent skin. Burn scar tissue is highly variable — some areas accept pigment well, others do not. Medical clearance and full scar stabilization are required before consultation can proceed. We work carefully and conservatively on burn cases.

Surgical Scars

Craniotomy scars, neurosurgery incisions, tumor-removal scarring, and other medical procedure scars on the scalp. Many surgical scars are excellent candidates for camouflage once they have fully healed and the treating physician has cleared the area for cosmetic procedures.

Accident & Trauma Scars

Scars from vehicle accidents, falls, lacerations, and other trauma. Presentation varies widely. Healed scar tissue in stable condition is typically a good candidate. Cases involving keloid formation or highly irregular scar texture are reviewed on an individual basis.

Alopecia Scarring

Scarring alopecia (including lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and discoid lupus) causes permanent hair follicle destruction. SMP on stable scarring alopecia can reduce the visual contrast between affected and unaffected scalp areas. Stability of the condition is a prerequisite.

Radiation-Related Hair Loss

Radiation therapy to the scalp or head can cause permanent hair loss in treated areas. SMP can address the appearance of radiation-related scalp changes once treatment has concluded, the skin has stabilized, and oncology has cleared cosmetic procedures.

Other Scalp Trauma

If your situation does not fit a category listed here, contact us and describe what you are dealing with. We will review the case and give you an honest assessment — including a referral if another specialist or prior treatment step is more appropriate.

What to Expect

A Slower, More Careful Process

Paramedical cases move at a different pace than standard SMP. The consultation is longer. The first session is more conservative. The review period matters more.

01

Initial Consultation

We review the scar in detail — type, age, stability, texture, and tone. You are asked about any medical history relevant to the treatment area, current medications, and prior procedures. Photos may be reviewed privately before the in-person meeting if preferred. No commitment is made at this stage.

02

Medical Clearance if Required

For burn, radiation, or surgical cases, we may request written clearance from the treating physician or care team before proceeding. This is not a formality — it is how we protect you. We can provide documentation for your physician describing the planned procedure if helpful.

03

Conservative First Session

Paramedical first sessions are intentionally lighter than standard SMP. We test how the scar tissue responds before committing to full coverage. Some scar types require multiple conservative passes rather than single deeper sessions to achieve the best outcome.

04

Extended Healed Review

We ask for a longer review period between sessions on paramedical cases — typically four to six weeks. This allows accurate assessment of how the scar tissue has retained pigment before the next session is planned. The final result is evaluated honestly against the original goals.

For Medical Providers

Referring a Patient to Sonoma County SMP

If you are a physician, plastic surgeon, burn care specialist, oncologist, dermatologist, or mental health provider considering a referral, we welcome direct contact before any patient appointment is scheduled.

We will discuss the case candidly, clarify what paramedical SMP can and cannot achieve for the specific presentation, and ensure that any session is coordinated appropriately with ongoing care. We understand that a referral carries professional responsibility — and we do not take that lightly.

A Note on How We Approach This Work

We Only Take Cases We Can Stand Behind

Paramedical SMP is not for every studio. It requires more care, more conservatism, and more honesty than standard cosmetic SMP. We do not take on paramedical cases to fill a schedule or expand a service menu.

We take them because we believe that people navigating difficult physical situations deserve access to skilled, careful practitioners who will treat them with dignity — and because we have the training and the discipline to do this work responsibly.

If after your consultation we do not believe we are the right fit for your case, we will tell you — and we will do our best to point you toward the appropriate next step.
